Biography
Dr. Avery L. Buchholz specializes in adult degenerative scoliosis, complex spine revisions, and minimally invasive spinal procedures.
Dr. Buchholz grew up in rural Wisconsin prior to attending The Citadel in Charleston SC. After graduating summa cum laude, he returned to the University of Wisconsin for medical school where he earned both a Doctor of Medicine and a Masters in Public Health. He then completed a neurological surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He earned the Intern of the Year Award his first year of training and was one of the most outstanding residents in neurosurgery throughout.
Dr. Buchholz had a strong interest in spinal disorders throughout his residency, focusing his research and clinical training on minimally invasive spine surgery and advancing those techniques. He had numerous publications and presentations on this topic throughout residency, winning awards for both. After his training at MUSC, he completed a complex spine surgery fellowship at the University of Virginia working with world renowned surgeons Dr. Christopher Shaffrey and Dr. Justin Smith. While at UVA he also completed an AO spine fellowship, winning the national award for best clinical research.
He treats all disorders of the spine with particular expertise in spinal deformity, adult and pediatric scoliosis, complex spine surgery, tumors of the spine, and minimally invasive surgeries.
